October 6, according to the New Julian calendar, is the day of memory of St. Thomas. Thomas was a fisherman and lived in Galilee. One day, he heard Jesus Christ preaching, which inspired him to join the new teaching. Soon Thomas became an apostle, a disciple of Jesus.

Territorial Defense Day of Ukraine is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of October. The holiday was established by a presidential decree on September 30, 2020, given the importance of territorial defense in ensuring the country's defense capability and territorial integrity.

World Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 5, and in Ukraine, the holiday is celebrated on the first Sunday of October, which this year falls on the 6th. The day was first celebrated in 1980. In independent Ukraine, in support of the initiative of educators, the Presidential Decree of 1994 established Teachers' Day to be celebrated annually on the first Sunday of October. One of the interesting traditions is the so-called "self-government day" when high school students take it upon themselves to teach younger students, thus giving teachers a chance to rest.
