Saint Andrew's Day

November 30 marks several important events in Ukraine. In particular, the Radio-Technical and Special Troops of Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine celebrate their professional day. This is a professional holiday for servicemen and employees who ensure the operation of radio systems in the AFU.

Believers honor the memory of St. Andrew the First-Called. This is a religious holiday that honors one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. St. Andrew is considered the patron saint of Ukraine, and his prophecy about Kyiv became the spiritual foundation for our country.

St. Andrew the First-Called

He was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who went down in the history of Christianity as the first called disciple of the Savior. He was born to a fisherman's family in the city of Bethsaida in Galilee at the beginning of the first century. From a young age, Andrew decided to devote his life to serving God, remained unmarried, and sought spiritual perfection.

Andrew became a disciple of John the Baptist after hearing him preach on the Jordan River about the coming of the Messiah. Later, he not only accepted the faith but also brought his brother Simeon, who became the Apostle Peter. According to the Gospel, it was Andrew whom Jesus called the first of the apostles, and this is how he was named the First-Called.

Throughout his life, the apostle followed Jesus and witnessed the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ. After the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Andrew received the gift of healing diseases and preaching in different languages.

Mission and martyrdom

Andrew the First-Called preached Christian teaching in many pagan countries. He crossed the Bosphorus and reached the territories of modern Kyiv and Novgorod, spreading the faith in Eastern Europe. However, when he returned to the pagans, the apostle was sentenced to death. He was crucified on a cross in the shape of the letter "X," which was later named St. Andrew's.

The relics of St. Andrew were transferred first to Constantinople and later to Italy, where they are still kept.
