On October 3, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Dionysius the Areopagite. He was the first bishop of Athens and one of the most prominent preachers of Christianity in Greece. Dionysius lived in the first century and was converted to Christianity by the Apostle Paul himself during his preaching at the Areopagus.

After his conversion to Christianity, Dionysius actively spread the faith in Athens and other cities. He was persecuted for his activities and eventually was martyred.
