October 23 according to the New Julian calendar is the day of memory of the Apostle James. James was the son of St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary. He was one of the seventy younger apostles and was often called the "brother of the Lord." According to legend, James has long been considered the patron saint of men who do hard physical labor.

The weather on this day was used to predict how the winter would be. If it rains, frost will come in a few weeks. But it was also a sign of a bountiful grain harvest next year. Sunny weather indicated that the fall would be long, spring would be early, and winter would not be severe.

October 23 is World iPod Day. The original iPod had a Brick game invented by Steve Wozniak. The 1GB model was advertised as being able to hold up to 240 songs. In general, the first iPods boasted the ability to "fit 1,000 songs in your pocket."
