According to the new church calendar in Ukraine, on November 27, Orthodox Christians commemorate the Holy Great Martyr James the Persian and the Holy Reverend Paladin. This is a day of remembrance of the extraordinary courage and perseverance of faith demonstrated by James, who suffered terrible torments but did not give up Christianity.

James came from Persia and held a high position in the court of King Isdigerd. At first, lured by honors, he apostatized, but later, after being admonished by his mother and wife, he realized his sin and returned to Christianity. He publicly confessed his faith before the king, for which he was sentenced to severe torture.

The king ordered that the saint's fingers and toes be gradually cut off to force him to deny Christ. James bravely endured each of these torments, perceiving suffering as the path to eternal life. His words during the torture testified to his deep faith in God and hope for a heavenly reward.

During his execution, James prayed and praised God. He compared his suffering to the pruning of a vine that bears fruit after trials. His example convincingly demonstrated the power of faith in the face of death.

James' life was a testimony of true devotion to Christ. The Church recalls his feat as an example of self-sacrifice and loyalty that inspires believers not to be afraid of difficulties in their Christian journey.

St. Palladius the Hermit lived at the end of the fourth century. He is known for his ascetic lifestyle, deep faith, and numerous miracles attributed to him by his contemporaries. He lived in a deserted cell near Antioch, Syria, leading a life of solitude and prayer.

He had the gift of miracles. According to legend, he once found the body of a murdered merchant under his door. Robbers had killed him and threw his body under the door of the house where Paladius lived. When they began to accuse him of killing the merchant, the hermit prayed and resurrected the dead man. The revived merchant told the truth about his killers.
