What holiday is celebrated on January 26 in Ukraine: calendar of events
On January 26, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Employee of the Control and Audit Service of Ukraine, and the world celebrates the International Customs Day. It is also the International Day of Clean Energy.
On this day, the Church honors the saints Xenophon and Mary. St. Xenophon, his wife Mary, and their sons Arcadius and John were noble residents of Constantinople in the fifth century. Despite their high status and wealth, this family was characterized by piety and a good heart. Wanting to give their sons the best education possible, Xenophon and Mary sent them to the Phoenician city of Beirut. However, during the journey, their ship was shipwrecked, and the brothers found themselves stranded in different places.
After surviving a shipwreck, John and Arkady decided to dedicate their lives to God and took monastic vows. Meanwhile, their parents had not heard from their sons for a long time and thought they were dead. However, St. Xenophon remained steadfast in his faith, reassured his wife and advised her to rely on the Lord. His confidence was justified: after many years of separation, the whole family was reunited in Jerusalem, where the brothers served in monasteries.
The reunion was a great blessing for the family. Grateful for this mercy, Xenophon and Mary also decided to take up monasticism, devoting their lives to prayer and spiritual endeavors. They observed strict fasting and silence, for which the Lord endowed them with the gift of miracles.
Their sons, Arcadius and John, said goodbye to their parents and retired to the desert, where they performed many spiritual feats. Their zeal in faith and righteous life led to the gift of discernment and miracle working. Their fame spread far beyond the monasteries.
Saints Xenophon and Mary remained in the monastery, devoting themselves to prayer and spiritual guidance of other monks. Their lives became a model of Christian humility, patience, and faith. They died in old age, leaving behind their memory as great ascetics of the Christian faith.
The memory of Sts. Xenophon, Mary, Arcadius, and John is celebrated by the Orthodox Church, and they are considered the patrons of family unity, prayer, and spiritual feat. Their lives are an example of boundless trust in the Lord and a reminder that faith and love can overcome any difficulties.
