What holidays are celebrated on February 11
On February 11, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Vlasius, Bishop of Sevastopol, Prince Vsevolod Mstislavich, baptized Gabriel, and the righteous Theodora, Empress of Byzantium.
St. Vlasy lived in the III-IV centuries and was a bishop in the city of Sevastia (modern Turkey). According to legend, Vlasius led a righteous life, for which he was revered by people. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, Vlasius was captured and subjected to severe torture. He refused to renounce his faith and was executed.
Prince Vsevolod (Gabriel) was the grandson of Vladimir Monomakh and reigned in Novgorod and Pskov in the twelfth century. He was known for his wisdom, justice, and piety. Vsevolod took part in many military campaigns, built churches and supported the development of education.
Empress Theodora lived in the sixth century. She was the wife of Emperor Justinian I. Theodora was known for her wisdom and influence on state affairs. She was also involved in charity work and helped the poor and disadvantaged.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated every year on February 11. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 2015 to promote full and equal access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics for women and girls. The idea for the holiday arose because women and girls still face barriers to pursuing a career in science. According to UNESCO, only about 30% of researchers in the world are women.
Safer Internet Day is celebrated annually on the second Tuesday of February. This day was launched by Insafe and INHOPE networks with the support of the European Commission to promote the safe and positive use of digital technologies, especially by children and young people.
World Sick Day was established by Pope John Paul II to draw public attention to the problems faced by sick people around the world. The date of February 11 was not chosen by chance. It was on this day that the apparition of Our Lady took place in Lourdes (France). Our Lady of Lourdes has become a symbol of healing and help for the sick. The World Day of the Sick is not only a religious holiday, it is an important social event that emphasizes the need for support and compassion for sick people, regardless of their faith or nationality.
The Day of Vows is a great occasion to reflect on your life, values and dreams. Perhaps today you will want to make a promise to yourself to become better, achieve more and make the world around you a little better and kinder.
February 11th is also the Day of Pleasure in Loneliness. It's a great idea because the ability to enjoy time alone is an important skill for psychological health and happiness.
