What holidays are celebrated on December 1
December 1, according to the New Julian calendar, is the day of remembrance of St. Nahum. Nahum was an Old Testament prophet who lived in the 7th century BC in Galilee. In his book, he predicted the destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian kingdom. In Orthodoxy, Nahum is also considered the patron saint of the sciences and literacy.
Philaret the Merciful is an Orthodox saint who lived in the 8th century in Byzantium. Filaret was noted for his kindness, humility, and compassion for the poor and suffering. According to legend, Filaret was the grandfather of Mary, who became the Queen of Byzantium. Having inherited wealth from his daughter, he gave it all away as charity. Filaret died a peaceful death in a monastery in Constantinople, where he was buried with honors and respect.
In 1987, James W. Boone and Thomas Netter, who worked for the Global AIDS Program, proposed the idea of organizing a World AIDS Day. The symbol of the fight against AIDS is the red ribbon, as a personification of understanding and solidarity.
On December 1, prosecutors celebrate their professional holiday. In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of Ukraine, the functions of the prosecutor's office are primarily in line with the position of building a state governed by the rule of law. Given the role of the prosecutor's office in strengthening the rule of law, protecting human and civil rights, and their contribution to the formation of Ukraine as a state governed by the rule of law, a presidential decree of 2000 established the professional holiday.
