What German-occupied Kyiv looked like in 1942. Rare photos from the Hungarian Archives

During World War II, Kyiv was occupied by Nazi troops for more than two years. During this time, many photographs of the Ukrainian capital were taken, including those from 1942. The originals of some of them are stored in the Hungarian archives.

The old photos were published by the spraga.info community on Facebook. You can see what our city was like 82 years ago.

The published photos show different locations of the Ukrainian capital, including the center.

After 78 days of defense, on September 19, 1941, during World War II, Kyiv was abandoned by the Soviet troops and captured by German ones. For two years, the city became the administrative center of the Kyiv General, City, and Rural district areas. On November 6, 1943, the Soviet government regained the capital of Ukraine.
