What countries and cities were most often searched on Google in 2024: tourists' choice
This year, the tourism industry was marked by new trends. Experts observed an increase in the number of visits to concerts, sporting events, and public events. More than 10 million music fans traveled to see Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. The Olympic Games were attended by more than 3 million sports fans.
A year ago, experts predicted these trends as part of their travel forecasts. Google has now released official data and shown which trends and destinations have actually gained popularity this year.
10. Dubrovnik Croatia
Croatia is gradually gaining a reputation as the most popular tourist destination in Europe. The Adriatic coast is recognized as one of the most attractive and cleanest on the continent. The top cities are Split and Zagreb. And the historic city of Dubrovnik is on the first place. Croatia has more than 4000 km of coastline, so there is a huge selection of beaches.
9. Mauritius
Mauritius is gaining popularity again. In the eighties and nineties, Mauritius was a favorite destination of the jet-setting crowd, but over time its glittering appeal faded. Now, the island is back in the spotlight thanks to numerous first-class hotels, a revival of conservation efforts and the growth of recreational areas.
8. Mexico
Mexico is all about white sandy beaches, rainforests and incredible cuisine. Mexico has all the ingredients that are suitable for any traveler - foodies can spend days bouncing between markets and restaurants in Mexico City, historians can delve into the deep chronicles of Mayan and Aztec ruins, and photo enthusiasts can head straight to the cenotes where sapphire blue water glistens in the sunlight.
7. Cyprus
Cyprus is not only about warm sea and endless beaches. You can climb rocky mountains covered with snow or explore the island's nature. The sea in this region is recognized as one of the best for diving. History buffs will love the ancient ruins and Byzantine churches.
6. Portugal
Portugal always has something to surprise travelers. The city of Porto is a relative newcomer to the list, but this year, requests for this destination have increased. The remote archipelago of the Azores is often ignored in favor of the country's beach resorts.
5. Egypt
Egypt remains a permanent fixture on travelers' bucket lists. Egypt is not only an all-inclusive destination. It is a great opportunity to dive into ancient history, visit art galleries, see the Nile and the Sahara Desert.
4. Italy
Milan with its first-class shopping, Florence, the cradle of art, and Tuscany with its endless vineyards are in this year's top. In the category of gastronomic tourism, Rome is on top.
3. Malta
This island is a popular European destination. The capital city of Valletta made it to the top of the year. Malta can be too hot in summer, so the winter months are ideal for traveling to this Mediterranean island nation. Climbing and hiking are especially enjoyable in the off-season, as the countryside is at its greenest at this time.
2. Greece
The second place in the top list goes to Greece. Athens, Mykonos, Kefalonia, Crete, Santorini - these destinations are always popular.
1. Turkey
And Turkey is in the first place. It's interesting, by the way, that it didn't make it to the top 10 in 2023. Turkey really deserves its place - it is a diverse country where you can learn about culture, history, and grand architecture. Head to the coast to see the enchanting landscapes, authentic villages, and chic bohemian vacation spots. Istanbul is an important seaport, a major industrial and cultural center of Turkey, located on the Bosphorus coast.
