First things first: of course, typologizing drivers according to their preferred car brands is a rather arbitrary exercise. Often, society falls prey to stereotypes about drivers based on the make and model of their vehicle. Sometimes these assumptions are accurate, but more often than not, it's not just about stereotypes.

In a new report, Lending Tree experts used tens of millions of insurance quotes from QuoteWizard to determine which car brands are owned by the best and worst drivers. The experts analyzed data on three dozen popular brands.

American analysts note that Ram drivers were the most likely to get into accidents - 32.9 driving incidents (accidents, accidents, speeding, etc.) per 1000 drivers. Ram is known for quality engines with impressive speed and power. The Ram 1500, listed as one of the fastest pickups by J.D. Power, is particularly notable for its ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km per hour in 7.4 seconds.

Tesla drivers were no different, either, with 31.13 incidents.

Subaru was the third brand on the outsider list with 30.09 accidents. Overall, Ram, Tesla, and Subaru were the only three brands with drivers who had more than 30.00 accidents.

Although Ram drivers were ahead of Tesla in a negative sense, electric car drivers showed the highest accident rate. From November 14, 2022, to November 14, 2023, Tesla drivers had 23.54 accidents per 1000 drivers. The next in the anti-rating are Ram (22.76) and Subaru (20.90).

At the same time, Pontiac (8.41), Mercury (8.96), and Saturn (9.13) were the only brands with fewer than 10 accidents per 1000 drivers.

But there was one brand whose drivers might be even more reckless than Tesla owners. BMW drivers had an average of 3.13 DUIs per 1000 drivers, the highest of any brand by a wide margin.

Ram drivers were the second highest with 1.7 incidents.

Mitsubishi (0.89), Volvo (0.92), and Mercury and Kia drivers (both 0.93) were the most sober.

It is difficult to understand why certain brands may have a higher accident rate. Returning to the issue of stereotypes, we can note that some car brands may attract more risky drivers.
