Tourists in Venice will be charged 5 euros

The popular Italian resort of Venice will become a paid destination on peak days. Tourists will be charged 5 euros for the entrance if they do not stay overnight.

The pilot initiative will start in 2024 and will operate on peak days. The local authorities aim to regulate the number of visitors and encourage guests to come at less busy times, the Daily Mail reports.

Starting January 16, the website www.cda.ve.it, where visitors will be able to "book" a day in Venice, will be launched. Every tourist over 14 years old will have to pay.

Foreigners who come for a day will receive a QR code for five euros, which will then be checked at seven access points throughout the city, including the main railway station.

The rule is expected to be in effect for 29 days between April and mid-July, covering most weekends. However, it will only depend on the city's occupancy.

That is, if the government sees that a lot of people have entered the city on a given day, the rest will be charged from 8:30 to 16:00. If there are few tourists, they won't have to pay.

Government officials plan to encourage longer trips in the city and weekday travel. This is supposed to help relieve the resort and improve the quality of life of the townspeople.

Travelers who provide proof of booking a hotel or staying elsewhere for a night or longer will not be charged.
