Venice officially bans large groups of tourists: how to travel now
Venice is a city that has long attracted tourists with its unique atmosphere and unusual exterior. It would seem that this has a positive effect on the city's economy, but in fact, the large number of crowds has negative consequences.
That is why restrictions on the size of tourist groups have recently been introduced. Euronews has more details about this.
Venice, one of the most famous Italian cities, has taken another step to regulate the flow of tourists and improve the quality of life for local residents. Recently, restrictions were introduced on the size of tourist groups, as well as a ban on the use of megaphones by guides. Under the new rules, tourist groups are limited to 25 people.
The only exceptions are groups of children under two years old, as well as those on school and educational trips. Guides who violate these rules face a fine of 25 to 500 euros.
These changes are aimed at reducing overcrowding in the city and ensuring a more controlled flow of visitors and more comfortable conditions for both tourists and residents of Venice.
The new restrictions apply not only to the central part of Venice, but also to the famous islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, which are also frequently visited by tourists. The city authorities note that such measures are aimed at improving the movement of tourist groups and preserving the city's historical heritage.
How else Venice cope with uncontrolled flows of tourists?
Venice has long faced problems due to the excessive flow of tourists. The UN Cultural Agency has twice considered adding the city to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Danger. This was avoided by limiting the arrival of large cruise ships through the Giudecca Canal.
The city is also experimenting with a one-day visit fee. From April to mid-July, a fee of 5 euros per person was applied on 29 peak days.
Despite generating 2.2 million euros from 450,000 visitors, some critics have called the measure a failure because it did not significantly reduce the number of tourists. During the first 11 days of the trial period, an average of 75,000 people visited the city daily.
How to travel now?
Tourists planning to visit Venice should take into account the new rules and prepare for possible changes in the organization of their trips. It is recommended to pay attention to the number of people in the group, avoid using loud devices and be prepared to pay a tourist tax.
