The Kyiv National Complex "Expocenter of Ukraine" (VDNKh) is not just an exhibition center, but a real historical monument of Ukrainian architecture of the XX-XXI centuries. Founded in the mid-50s of the last century as a demonstration of the achievements of Soviet industry and agriculture, the Expocenter has gone through ups and downs to be reborn in its modern form.

Designed by the best architects of the time, VDNKh became a symbol of the country's reconstruction after World War II. Its pavilions, decorated with monumental bas-reliefs, told about the achievements of Soviet science and technology. VDNKh was visited by the highest state officials from all over the world.

The Kyiv Historical community published a historic photo on its Telegram channel showing what VDNKh looked like before the massive development of the Teremky area of the capital. It was taken from a bird's eye view.

This photo shows the then outskirts of the capital, which was not yet built up with high-rise buildings. You can see the endless expanse of modern Teremky.

History of VDNKh

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the exhibition center gradually fell into decline. Lack of funding and lack of state support led to the fact that the once majestic complex turned into an abandoned territory.

The situation began to change only in the mid-2010s. A new management team took on the revival of VDNKh. Large-scale restoration work was carried out, new recreation areas were created, and various cultural events were organized.

Modern VDNKh

Today, VDNKh is not just an exhibition venue, but a real cultural and innovation center that offers its visitors many opportunities for recreation and entertainment.

Winter amusement parks, summer festivals, concerts, sports competitions – all this has become an integral part of VDNKh's life. Here you can go ice skating, attend master classes, enjoy delicious food, and just spend time with friends and family.

One of the main achievements of the new team was the creation of the world's unique winter entertainment park and festival, Winterland. The country's largest open-air skating rink, winter slides, St. Nicholas Residence, Ice Sculpture Castle, winter fair, and other locations are starting to operate.

VDNKh also has an educational and innovative cluster – the "Midgard" school, an indoor ice arena for professional hockey and figure skating training, a registry office, and its own art cluster.

Thanks to the efforts of the new team, VDNKh has become one of the most popular vacation destinations for Kyiv residents and visitors. Its attendance has increased several times, and the territory of the complex is constantly evolving.
