The biggest advantage of buying a used car compared to a new one is that the price is usually much lower. But buying a car on the secondary market is a kind of lottery, because there is a high risk of buying a model that will require additional investments.

Experts have conducted research on used cars and identified models that are best avoided. These models will not be a profitable investment - on the contrary, you will have to constantly spend money on repairs and maintenance.

In the course of analyzing the market, several factors were taken into account. Here are the three most important ones:

  • How often the car requires repair and maintenance;
  • what is the life expectancy with proper care;
  • what the safety record is.

Tesla Model 3

The Finance Buzz report notes that the Tesla doesn't have a great reputation in the aftermarket. It needs expensive repairs, but parts aren't easy to come by. You'll probably have to wait months for parts to arrive, and in the meantime, you'll have to rely on a rental car, experts say.

2020 Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan may be an affordable option for families that need extra space, but it also has big drawbacks, according to Finance Buzz. They mostly concern safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Caravan low marks for its poor headlights. That's not the only problem. Although the vehicle has car seat mounts, "they are stuck too deep into the seat for easy access."

Rivian R1T 2022

Consumer Reports gives the Rivian R1T a low reliability rating because of the climate control, drive system, and body hardware. Another problem with the R1T is that despite these shortcomings, it's not a budget model at all.

Ford Bronco Sport 2021

The reborn Ford Bronco in 2021 is experiencing engine, brake, and transmission problems, as well as air and water leaks, according to Finance Buzz. So this model should definitely be avoided.

Volkswagen Taos 2022.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Volkswagen Taos has been recalled multiple times by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Problems include premature pad/rotor wear, brake failure, antifreeze leaks, and overheating.

Jeep Compass 2023.

According to Finance Buzz, the Compass 2023 is being recalled due to electrical problems. Some models are also unable to display information like speedometer readings and warning lights. In addition, previous models have had transmission, suspension, and steering problems.

Mercedes-Benz GLE 2020.

Despite being a popular luxury SUV, the 2020 model has been recalled 11 times due to electrical system software, wiring and body panel problems, according to Finance Buzz.

Chevrolet Tahoe 2021

Consumer Reports estimates that the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is experiencing serious engine problems, according to Consumer Reports. Meanwhile, the 2022 version had "worse built-in electrics than in previous years."
