Ukrainians began to buy expensive cars during the war: the reasons are named

In Ukraine, the average cost of a car is constantly growing and is now the highest in the last four years. This applies to both new and used cars.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in January-September 2020 and  in 2021, 60-80 thousand new cars were sold in Ukraine, and in the same period in 2023 - only 46 thousand. But the number of used cars imported from abroad exceeded the figures for 2020, according to the EP material.

Thus, the average price of a car in January-September 2023 in Ukraine increased by 20% to UAH 1.56 million compared to the same periods in 2020-2021. The cost of used cars imported from abroad is also growing: by 16% to UAH 430 thousand.

Ukrainians buy not only more expensive car brands abroad, but also newer ones. The age of a used car is now the lowest in recent years - less than 10 years, while previously this figure was 11-12 years.

There may be several reasons for such trends. In particular, it may happen may be due to record sales of premium cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus. Also, the corruption factor should not be ruled out, namely the temporary abolition of public declarations for those in power who abused it to buy expensive cars for themselves and their families.

Another reason for the seemingly atypical trend is the desire of Ukrainians to live "here and now," says Oleg Omelnytsky, director of Auto-Consulting. He emphasizes that during the war our citizens do not want to postpone the purchase of expensive things for later, as they are not sure about the future.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, European automakers are abandoning the cheapest models amid stringent environmental requirements. But another threat is Chinese cars, which are increasingly occupying the niche of budget cars, even in the electric car segment.
