Ukrainian Olha Kharlan wins gold at Fencing World Cup
Famous Ukrainian saber fencer Olha Kharlan has won the second stage of the Fencing World Cup in Lima, Peru. This was the 33-year-old native of Mykolaiv's first victory at the World Cup level since 2019, when she won in Salt Lake City, USA.
Olha defeated Battai Sugár Katinka 15-6 in the decisive match.
It should be noted that Kharlan finished the first stage of the Fencing World Cup in Algeria in second place, winning a silver medal, which became the 30th anniversary medal in her career.
In total, five Ukrainian women participated in Lima. Yelyzaveta Melnychuk did not make it to the main round, Olena Kravatska lost in the last 16, and Yulia Bakastova and Alina Komashchuk lost in the round of 16.
Kharlan, who was the fifth seed in the tournament, began her journey at the Peru stage with a 15-6 victory over Hungarian Renata Katona, then took turns defeating Italy's Claudia Rotili (15-8), France's Sarah Noutcha (15-12) and 2017 European Individual Sabre Championships bronze medalist Liza Pusztai from Hungary (15-11).
In the semifinals, Kharlan's opponent was tenth-seeded Elizabeth Tartakovsky from the United States, whom the Ukrainian defeated with a score of 15:12.
