Ukraine is ready to limit the volume of its exports to the European Union in order to get Poland to lift its border blockade. However, in return, it wants the EU to ban the import of products from Russia into its territory.

This was announced by Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine, according to the Financial Times. He emphasized that it is not Ukrainian wheat that creates problems for Polish farmers, but Russian wheat.

"Kachka said that Kyiv agrees to new restrictions on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products. However, the EU should ban the export of Russian agricultural products, which still enter the bloc through Belarus and the Baltic states," the report said.

In particular, it is emphasized that Ukraine agrees with the restrictions proposed by Brussels - which are to come into force in June - on the import of a number of products. In particular:

  • eggs
  • poultry
  • sugar.

It also agrees to the EU allowing individual countries to close their markets to Ukrainian grain. However, this does not apply to the transit of the product to other countries.

"Perhaps for the transition period, this kind of managed approach to trade flows between Ukraine and the EU is what we all need. ... However, with regard to wheat, it is not Ukraine that creates problems for Polish farmers, but Russia," summarized Kachka.

The Poles have extended the period of the border blockade

At the same time, Polish farmers have extended the blockade of the border with Ukraine for almost 2 months - until April 30. Previously, they intended to end it on March 10. In this way, the Poles want to achieve restrictions on the import of agricultural products from outside the European Union, including from Ukraine.

This is stated in the relevant document published by the Municipal Office of the Lubicz-Korolowska Commune. According to it, 100 people will block the border.

"The public meeting is scheduled to start on March 10, 2024 at 14:30 and end on April 30, 2024 at 14:30. The goal is to eliminate the Green Deal (an EU strategy aimed at reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere - Ed.) and limit products from outside the EU, in particular from Ukraine," it says.
