Ukraine performed at the Biathlon World Cup: results of the first race
On Saturday, November 25, the 2023/2024 Biathlon World Cup season kicked off with a stage in Östersund, Sweden. The competition was opened by the single mixed relay (supermixtures).
Ukraine, represented in this race by Artem Tyshchenko and Anastasia Merkushyna, took 10th place.
Artem performed much more confidently, demonstrating that he was ready to compete on the same level as the world's top biathletes. The 29-year-old native of the Sumy region shot accurately, not allowing his opponent to break away in terms of speed.
The situation deteriorated when Anastasiia took to the track. The Ukrainian was losing 20 seconds on the course, which immediately dropped our team to the bottom of the top ten.
Before the final relay change, our team was in fourth place, 37 seconds behind the leaders (Sweden). However, Merkushyna was unable to shoot accurately, making 4 misses and losing almost a minute.
Sweden eventually finished first. Norway came in second. France took third place.
As OBOZ.UA reported, last season was a failure for the Ukrainian national team. For the first time in 30 years, Ukrainian biathletes failed to win a single medal. In 2021, our team won one bronze medal. The last time Ukraine won gold was in the 2018/19 season.
