Turkey intends to replace Russia, which has lost the European gas market: supplies to a number of countries are already underway
Turkey could replace Russia as a gas supplier to Europe. They believe they can handle it, as they already supply natural gas to several European countries and have a well-developed infrastructure.
This is reported by Hürriyet. It is noted that gas is currently being supplied from Turkey to Moldova, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and North Macedonia.
"The situation between Russia and Ukraine will strengthen Turkey's position as a safe alternative to Russia. Turkey has been a safe gas transportation route for some time now. This is largely due to its geographical location and gas infrastructure," the statement said.
In particular, it is emphasized that Russian gas pipelines – Blue Stream and Turkish Stream – pass through Turkey. As well as from Azerbaijan and Iran – TANAP.
"If the capacities connecting Turkey with Greece and Bulgaria are strengthened, there will be a potential for exporting large volumes of gas to European markets. Both the gas produced in Turkey and the gas received from other countries. ...Turkey has a very serious gas infrastructure. We can bring gas and supply it. Turkey is one of the most important routes, especially for the countries of Southeastern Europe," the analysts said.
Russia has lost the European market
Turkey started talking about replacing Russia in the European market after Ukraine stopped transiting Russian gas through its territory on January 1. This was done because the contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz signed before the start of the great war, had expired.
According to Reuters, for Ukraine, the termination of transit means a loss of about $800 million in annual revenue from transit fees. Russia, in turn, will lose about $5 billion from gas sales to European consumers.
At the same time, European countries have prepared in advance for the termination of gas supplies through Ukraine. In particular:
- Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and other countries have found alternative routes.
- Hungary will continue to receive gas through the Turkish Stream pipeline.
- Since 2022, the European Union has significantly reduced its dependence on Russian gas by increasing energy imports from the United States, Norway, and Qatar.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, for his part, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened to limit the supply of electricity from his country to Ukraine and visited the Kremlin to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. In response, Zelenskyy said that Putin had instructed Fico to open a second energy front against Ukraine at the expense of the interests of the Slovak people.
