Tripadvisor named the 10 best cities in the world for traveling in August 2024. The list
August is a month when you can still catch up with summer and have an unforgettable vacation. But you need to choose your travel destination carefully to get the most out of your vacation.
Tripadvisor has compiled a list of ten places around the world that are worth seeing in August. Different points are suitable for lovers of different types of recreation.
Toronto
For travelers who just want to dance
Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, so it makes sense that Toronto is home to the Caribbean Carnival, North America's largest festival dedicated to Caribbean culture. If you only have time for one event, choose the Grand Parade on August 3. It takes place on Lakeshore Boulevard and is free to watch. Or buy a ticket to a special viewing platform on the territory of the exhibition complex. To learn more about the Caribbean influence on Toronto's culture, head to Eglinton Avenue West, where Little Jamaica is located, a place with colorful restaurants serving Caribbean food and drinks.
Memphis, Tennessee
For Elvis Presley fans
Every August in Memphis, the Graceland Estate hosts Elvis Week, a festival dedicated to the life and music of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. It attracts about 35,000 people. You can stay in a guest house on the musician's estate or go on an excursion to his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi, to stay in the two-room house where he was born in 1935. Also visit the monument to the singer on Beale Street or book a private walking tour of the city center, which focuses on the sites associated with his work. Check out the Blues Hall of Fame Museum and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
Rabat, Morocco
For those who don't like crowds
The Moroccan capital Rabat remains cool, breezy and blissfully uncrowded in August. The city is located on the Atlantic coast and offers not only beaches, but also some of the country's most underrated museums and attractions, from the red sandstone Hassan Tower to the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern Art. Be sure to take time to visit the recently restored National Museum of Jewelry, which houses some of the oldest known jewelry in the world. And before the sun sets, head to Rabat Beach for a stroll along the beach during the golden hour and take photo ops with panoramic views of the water.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
For beginner surfers
Do you think surfing is only for Hawaii and California? Actually, it's not. Every August, Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships, which is the longest continuous surfing competition in the world. Compete with other surfers, just watch the athletes, or take a lesson from the pros. This is also a good time for visitors to see bottlenose dolphins. Take a stroll along Sandbridge Beach at dawn or dusk to spot them, or book a sunset kayaking tour to increase your chances of an encounter.
Pesaro, Italy
For opera lovers
Italy is not filled to the brim with tourists. Some of its gems are hidden from view. Like Pisaro, the country's cultural capital for 2024. The city is about a three-hour train ride from Venice and Florence and is best known as the birthplace of composer Gioachino Rossini. Every summer, locals and visitors honor his legacy at the Opera Festival, which this year will take place from August 7 to 23. Performances take place in venues such as the historic Teatro Rossini and the recently renovated Auditorium Scavolini. Visit the maestro's museum or simply enjoy the local architecture, including the 15th-century Palazzo Ducale and the exquisite Art Nouveau Villino Ruggeri.
Fargo, North Dakota
For lovers of blooms and good restaurants
Thousands of sunflowers bloom in August near a small town in what is probably the least touristy state in the United States. Head west of Fargo toward the Mapleton area and you'll see endless fields. As for souvenirs, look for jars of SunButter, a delicious oil made from the seeds of this flower, in local grocery stores. In addition, this place has started to surprise with restaurants in recent years. Three restaurants have been named semifinalists for the 2024 James Beard Award.
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
For tourists who want the trail to be at their disposal
Many people think that a trip to the Grand Canyon in August means terrible heat and crowds of tourists. In fact, the weather in Arizona at this time is quite pleasant, and to avoid pushing other people, choose the northern part of the park rather than the southern one. It is visited by only 10% of tourists. And for good reason. Here you can stay in a hotel that was built in 1937 from local limestone and kaibab wood, or spend the night in a campsite. For some of the best views of the canyon, be sure to follow the 0.5-mile paved trail from the North Rim Visitor Center to Bright Angel Point.
Melbourne, Australia
For theater lovers
Sydney is a city for beach lovers, but Melbourne is a center of high culture with great cafes, cozy pubs, and world-class museums. It is also arguably the theater capital of the Southern Hemisphere. And in August, when it's not too hot, it's the perfect time to enjoy the arts. The local theater program is in full swing - just buy tickets to see classic plays or contemporary productions. Take your pick of drama or musicals. There's a wide variety at your service.
Los Angeles
For movie fans
Summer in Los Angeles is full of events that bring moviegoers out of the dark theaters and into the fresh air. For example, the Hollywood Bowl concert hall is teaming up with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a Singin' in the Rain concert (August 27) and Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga concert conducted by Gustavo Dudamel (August 30-31). In Glendale, the Alex Film Society presents its Classic Films Under the Stars series at Brand Park, and the Ford Amphitheater in the Hollywood Hills presents a mini-Studio Ghibli animation film festival from August 23-25. Across the city, the Street Food Cinema program combines live music and food trucks with screenings of popular movies. For moviegoers, season passes are available for $199, which allow you to attend more than 30 events throughout the season, every Saturday from April to October.
Zurich, Switzerland
For those who always take their swimsuit with them
Switzerland's largest city boasts an outdoor swimming culture dating back to the Roman Empire, when the place was called Turicum. Today, Zurich is filled with badis, or open-air swimming pools. And every traveler will find a place to their liking. It can be a women's only or men's only bath. Or a sandy beach for sunbathing. On the city's website, look for information about the current water temperature and the number of people in each pool. And don't forget to bring towels and sunscreen. Once you're dry, you'll definitely have plenty to do, including visiting the Löwenbräukunst, a contemporary art museum in a converted brewery, and even the Fondue Tram.
