Treasure Island in the United States has gained fame as the place with the most ghosts: how to get there

Admit it, when you read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson as a child, you also dreamed of going to such an island. And now this dream is closer than ever – you can go to a real Treasure Island on vacation.

According to the Mirror, in the waters between San Francisco and Oakland, there is a small industrial zone called Treasure Island in honor of Stevenson and his book. This place has served as a location for filming such movies as Indiana Jones and The Matrix. It is also famous for being one of the most visited haunted islands in California.

This title was given to the island thanks to the infamous Cosson Hall, an abandoned naval base. Locals claim that it is inhabited by spirits, which is why you can hear ghosts singing and trees whispering.

In the 1960s, a barracks for young sailors was opened here. In its heyday, the Treasure Island Naval Base served many functions: it housed an electronics school, hangars for aircraft and helicopter repair, and provided support to the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. It was also used to clean up warships that had leaked radioactive materials into the soil.

The base was decommissioned in 1997. The two star-shaped buildings of Cosson Hall stood empty until they were recently demolished.

However, the area still attracts many visitors. It is especially popular with paranormal investigators. They report finding evidence of their existence all over the island.

A number of graffiti artists who have created works in Cosson Hall have reported feeling cold hands grabbing them or hearing muffled laughter that had no visible source. The most famous ghost on the island is a man in a white sailor's uniform who can supposedly be heard whistling Anchors Aweigh, the unofficial anthem of the US Navy.

Before the trees around the base were cut down a few years ago, some phenomena were associated with them. Visitors would tell of glowing orbs in the leaves in the middle of the night. This is how one such tourist left a review on the Backpackerverse website: "Suddenly, lights shone in the trees. I thought we would soon be caught for trespassing, but no one came. The lights spun around and we heard muffled laughter coming from somewhere. My boyfriend swears he saw a man nearby pointing at us, he was talking to one of the orbs."

Despite the notoriety of the place, more than 3,000 people continue to live on the island. Many offices are located there, and local sports teams have their grounds there. There is a daily ferry that connects the island with San Francisco. The ferry schedule is from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm.
