Travelling to Vancouver: what to see in British Columbia

Albina PanchenkoNews
Interesting locations in British Columbia

Vancouver is a Canadian port city famous for its many modern museums and one of the most interesting libraries in America. It is the largest settlement in the province with an unusual name - British Columbia. OBOZREVATEL has selected the top locations in Vancouver that everyone should see.

Stanley Park

This part of the city was once home to the indigenous peoples of America. However, during the English colonization, the tribes left these places and were forced to look for another home. Now the park stretches for many hectares along the bay.

The total length of hiking trails is over 250 kilometers. There are many fountains, artificial ponds, sculptures and art objects.

Gastown

Vancouver's historic district reminds many people of provincial British towns. Venetian architecture, narrow streets, and intricate labyrinths with cozy courtyards are the urban landscape that tourists see in this area. By the way, the area was named after the first settler Jack Dayton, who was nicknamed "Gussie", i.e. "talkative".

The most interesting object in the old part of Vancouver is an unusual clock. It was built according to a 19th-century project in the 1970s, dedicated to the struggle to preserve Gastown. Every 15 minutes, a loud chime comes from its underground part, and every hour a steam cloud rises into the sky.

Capilano

In the vicinity of Vancouver, there is a 137-meter Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. More than 800 thousand tourists try to test its strength every year. However, not everyone dares to walk this path. The fact is that the bridge is located 70 meters above the fast flows of the river of the same name. This landmark was named after an Indian chief who, according to legend, once lived here.

Science World

This center was created to popularize science among children. It is located in a large round building with a dinosaur on top. Here, you can get "inside" a camera, walk through the human circulatory system, try to lift a heavy meteorite off the ground, or understand the most complex laws of physics in a fun way.

Canada Place

This newest pier was built in 1986. It consists of a small port and an architectural structure in the shape of a sailing ship. There are many restaurants, hotels, shops, and souvenir shops here. The observation deck offers a charming view of the city.

Bridges of Vancouver

There are 20 different bridges in the city. The largest of them is romantically named "Lions Gate". It is 1518 meters long. The construction of this suspension road is associated with a scandal. During the Great Depression, the issue of building a bridge that would connect two large Canadian cities became acute. However, this required clearing 10 meters of a protected area, the central city park. Of course, the locals were against it. But the authorities decided to do it, so the Lions Gate was built in record time - a year and a half.

Vancouver Port

The Port of Vancouver is one of the most interesting locations in the city. In addition to large merchant ships, cruise ships and expensive yachts stop here. There is an observation deck on the territory, from which you can perfectly see Georgian Bay, which does not freeze even in winter.
