Tourists traveling to Europe have been warned of a hellish heat wave

Tourists have been warned of a "hellish" heat wave that will hit vacation destinations across southern Europe. Families traveling to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco this week are asked to prepare for a heat wave with highs of up to 46°C.

The mercury has already reached 44°C in the southern and eastern parts of the continent. People are asked to stay indoors to avoid excessive heat in Turkey, Greece, and Italy, which is inspired by a mass of hot air from the Sahara Desert in North Africa, Metro writes.

Spain has already seen extreme temperatures this summer, so local authorities have issued health alerts and warned of a high risk of wildfires. In Portugal, the heat is above 37°C, and strong winds are contributing to the spread of fire. In Italy, the temperature has finally dropped a few degrees to 38°C, but the weather forecast says the heat will continue. Greece is experiencing its worst wildfire threat in two decades, with some reservoirs reaching their lowest levels in 10 years. The Acropolis, Greece's largest cultural landmark, is forced to close from noon for five hours due to the heat.

"Protect yourself, moisturize yourself, freshen up, and take care of the more vulnerable," the authorities are appealing to residents and tourists.

People, especially the elderly, children, and pregnant women, are advised to stay home from 10:00 to 16:00. The warning will remain in effect as long as the heat remains above the seasonal norm.
