Top 6 toxic foods that dogs shouldn't consume

ObozrevatelNews

A veterinary nurse has warned dog owners about six common foods that can be deadly to their dogs.

Jade, who goes by The Vet Nurse on TikTok, is the proud owner of three dogs and three turtles and regularly posts pet care tips online. In one of her videos, she outlined six foods that are toxic to dogs and urged them to contact a veterinarian immediately if they ate them.

Cherries

Although the flesh of the fruit is harmless, the pits, stems, and leaves contain amygdalin, which turns into cyanide when digested.

This can lead to serious health problems such as shortness of breath, red gums, dilated pupils, and potentially fatal poisoning.

Raw potatoes

They contain solanine, especially in the skin. Solanine is poisonous to dogs (and to humans in large quantities). Cooking potatoes reduces the level of solanine, but it is still wise to exercise moderation.

Xylitol

This sweetener, found in many foods, can cause insulin release in dogs, leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, or even death. Although it is safe for human consumption, it can have harmful effects on a dog's metabolism.

Avocados

Jade also warns against feeding dogs avocados due to the content of peach, which is toxic. Although dogs tend to be more resistant to percussion than other animals such as birds or horses, avocado fruit, pits, leaves, and peel contain varying amounts of percussion, which can still pose a health risk to dogs.

Chocolate

Jade expressed surprise at the number of owners who admitted to feeding their dogs chocolate. Most often, it contains a chemical called theobromine. The chocolate itself is not toxic to dogs, but the theobromine contained in chocolate is highly toxic.

She went on to explain that the darker the chocolate, the higher the level of theobromine.

Grapes/raisins

Grapes and raisins are another food item that dogs should avoid because they are toxic and can lead to serious, potentially fatal health problems. The exact reason why grapes are toxic to dogs is not fully understood, but even small amounts can lead to kidney failure in dogs.
