Top 5 things not to do if you want to get rid of mold at home
Mold spores not only look unsightly, they can cause an allergic reaction in your immune system. However, once mold has entered your home, it can be incredibly difficult and expensive to completely eradicate it.
A mold remediation contractor took to TikTok to share five things he would never do to prevent and get rid of mold in his home.
According to him, the first thing to avoid to prevent a mold outbreak is using bleach to clean it.
"It doesn't work," the expert said in the video. While bleach can be used to clean small amounts of mold, it is not usually recommended as a primary method due to potential health concerns and the fact that it may not destroy the mold's root system completely. The mold will continue to grow below the surface and will return to the area you cleaned in a short time.
His next piece of advice will be of interest to all potential homebuyers, as he said he would never buy a home without doing a proper mold inspection. A mold inspection is different from a regular home inspection because it specifically checks for different types of mold that may be hidden in a home.
"A general inspection is not enough," the contractor wrote.
The third thing he claimed he would never do – given the risk of mold – was to install a jacuzzi in his bathroom.
"Jacuzzi bathtubs are notorious for mold," he said, showing a bathtub covered in mold on the outside.
"Fourth, buying a house in a flood zone," was the next thing he advised against, as he claimed the property had not been properly restored.
He also said that ignoring leaks in the house is a bad idea, as they can lead not only to the development of mold but also to structural damage and health risks if left untreated.
