Buying a car is a serious financial investment, so drivers want to choose a model with the perfect price-performance ratio. According to Consumer Reports ratings, some popular SUV models have failed to live up to expectations.

Experts conducted a study to determine the level of car reliability based on owner surveys and model specifications. Some SUVs received low predicted reliability scores.

Volkswagen Taos

Reliability rating: 1/5

The Volkswagen Taos tops the list of unreliable SUVs with the lowest possible predicted reliability score of 1 out of 5 from Consumer Reports. Owners reported experiencing a range of problems, from serious engine failures to breakdowns of electrical components and electronics. There were also complaints about the poor performance of transmissions. With such problems, the Taos is definitely one model to avoid.

Jeep Wrangler

Predicted reliability rating: 2/5

Although the Jeep Wrangler is known for its excellent off-road capabilities, it has not historically performed well in reliability ratings. Excessive interior noise, leaky removable tops, and shaky steering have earned the Wrangler a low predicted reliability score of only 2 out of 5.

Ford Explorer

Predicted reliability score: 1/5

Ford's Explorer SUV has had issues in recent years, including faulty electronics, transmission, and premature body hardware failures. Despite recent improvements, the Explorer still receives a low predicted reliability score of only 1 out of 5 from Consumer Reports.

Kia Sorento

Predicted reliability score: 1/5

The Kia Sorento midsize SUV has transmission and engine problems, all of which are reflected in its 1 out of 5 predicted reliability rating. The car is reasonably priced, but it can be costly for budget-conscious buyers to repair this inexpensive SUV.

Ford Bronco Sport

Predicted reliability rating: 2/5

Ford's relatively new Bronco Sport compact SUV has already earned a not-so-great reputation. Drivers have reported problems with brakes, serious engine malfunctions, and bodywork failures.

Chevrolet Bolt EUV

Predicted reliability rating: 1/5

Chevrolet's Bolt EUV compact crossover gets only 1 out of 5 in the reliability rating, despite its all-electric powertrain. Previous models have faced issues such as faulty electronics, electric motor defects, and water leaks. In general, the build quality of this model is very questionable, experts say.

Jeep Compass

Predicted reliability score: 2/5

The Jeep Compass compact SUV received a predicted reliability score of 2 out of 5. Persistent shortcomings include outdated transmission technology and steering problems that seem unlikely to be resolved as Jeep focuses on developing new models.

Dodge Durango.

Predicted reliability score: 2/5

Dodge's three-row Durango SUV has not impressed drivers. There have been many mechanical problems in past model years, earning the Durango a 2 out of 5 predicted reliability score - meaning it's an SUV that can't be relied upon.

Buick Enclave

Predicted reliability score: 2/5

The used Buick Enclave large crossover SUV gets 2 out of 5 predicted reliability scores. The SUV has encountered powertrain and electrical problems that remain unresolved in aging model lines.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Predicted reliability rating: 1/5

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio luxury compact SUV raises serious questions about its predicted reliability. Combined with other issues, its sensitive electronics and computer systems have earned the Stelvio the lowest possible reliability rating of 1 out of 5 from Consumer Reports.
