Three car interior odors that may indicate a malfunction have been identified

An automotive expert has urged all drivers to check their car as soon as they smell a certain odor coming from the air vents.

Thus, the JTAPE car maintenance specialist noted that odors can be controlling signs that something is wrong with the car, Express writes.

According to him, drivers should be especially careful when they smell burning in their car.

"Drivers who notice a burnt smell from the heating system could be dealing with several potential problems. A clogged cabin air filter can overheat due to restricted airflow, or the blower motor can fail and burn up, which can affect system performance," he said.

"In some cases, it could be worn belts or hoses in the engine compartment that can wear out and emit a burning odor. There is also a possibility of a short circuit, which not only causes unpleasant odors but can also lead to a fire," the expert said.

According to him, the burning smell coming from the vehicle's vents is usually caused by a malfunction of the HVAC system, such as a dirty and overheated cabin filter or a broken blower motor.

However, this odor can also be caused by more serious issues, such as worn belts, or electrical problems, such as burnt wires or short circuits.

Whatever the problem, it's important that drivers have their vehicle thoroughly checked by a mechanic to prevent any problems from worsening and risking a fire.

Another odor that the expert urged drivers not to ignore is a sweetish smell, which could be a sign of a leak in the cooling system.

He continued: "A sweet syrupy odor is often a sign of a coolant leak. This can occur due to a damaged heater core, which is an important part of the system responsible for heating the air inside your vehicle."

"A heater core leak can lead to reduced heating efficiency and even fogging of the windows from coolant vapor. In some cases, coolant can leak from the hoses or radiator, drip onto hot engine components, and create a sweet odor," he said.

Finally, the automotive expert warned that one of the most serious odors a driver can smell is gasoline or diesel. In this case, he urged owners to have their car checked immediately.

He added: "The smell of fuel coming from your heater is extremely dangerous.

"It could mean there is a problem with the fuel system, such as a leak or misfiring. If you notice this smell, turn off the heater, ventilate the car, and have it checked immediately," the expert said.
