What to see in Europe when traveling alone

Do you want to try traveling alone but are worried about what to expect? From communication to transportation, there are many unknown factors that you will have to face.

Choosing the right destination for your first solo trip can contibute to or spoil the experience, Euronews writes. Users of the Travel Reddit forum have identified the best places for first-time solo travelers, characterized by good transport links, friendly locals and minimal language barriers.

Travel by train from historic cities to the hidden nature of Spanish Andalusia

The autonomous community of Andalusia on the southern coast of Spain is filled with historic old towns and stunning nature, all of which are well connected by public transportation. This is great for travelers who want to navigate on their own without the stress and extra costs of traveling abroad.

One user says that "traveling through Malaga, Ronda, Seville, Cordoba, Granada is very easy by public transportation." Another emphasized that the city of Cordoba offers a unique experience. In particular, the local mosque-cathedral is quite famous. This place is now under UNESCO protection: it has been impressing visitors with its colorful arches and huge size since the Middle Ages.

Do you prefer the outdoors? "Andalusia also has some great places to hike if you want to be outdoors," one Reddit user says. From the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the ancient forest of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, the subtropical beaches of Granada to the wild beauty of the Almeria Desert, there is something to satisfy any adventurer.

Swap the bustling city for the beach in Portugal

Portugal ranks high as the best destination for first-time solo travelers. Reddit users recommend starting in Porto, the birthplace of port wine. "The locals are great," one said.

From here, take the train to Lisbon for "great" and "inexpensive" food. To save more money, get a Lisboa Card, a pass that covers travel and offers discounts and entry to more than 50 museums and monuments.

When you've had your fill of city life, continue south to the Atlantic beaches of the Algarve, three hours away by train.

Explore ancient temples and golden beaches on this English-speaking archipelago

Malta is highly recommended for those who speak English and are worried about the language barrier: it is one of the country's official languages along with Maltese. The compact island is easy to get around by bus or taxi, making "great, modern party venues, historical sites, charming beaches and countryside" accessible.
