"This is your territory, but I'm sorry." Kharlan confessed what will happen after her wedding to her Italian fiancé
Olha Kharlan, a two-time Olympic champion, has admitted that she is not going to abandon Ukrainian traditions for now, even though her fiancé is Italian. At the same time, the 34-year-old fencer noted that her wedding will be more modern.
Kharlan clarified that all the customs of her homeland would be preserved, even though Luigi has a large family (15 cousins). They have been together for many years, and it took her four years to memorize all of their names, even though her fiancé repeatedly told her.
His family has an interesting tradition: at Christmas, everyone gets together, no matter where they are, and reads poetry or something like carols.
"I also took part and recited in Ukrainian. For the first three years, everyone was happy: 'Wow, wow, wow'. And then: "Maybe that's enough?" (laughs). When we get married, Ukrainian traditions will definitely be there. I think it's their territory, but I'm sorry, Ukrainian traditions have to be there," Olha added on the LIGA Life YouTube channel.
Kharlan also told what her fiancé categorically refused to put up with.
"We have a tradition that the bride should wash her mother-in-law's feet. I told Gigi about it, and he said: "That's very interesting, but no" (laughs). We laughed a lot about it. We'll see, I'll think about it," the athlete added.
Olha recalls with a smile how she tried to surprise her lover with Ukrainian food.
"It's very difficult to surprise Italians with your cuisine and traditions. But I cooked cabbage rolls for them and they really liked it. I didn't make borscht because they don't really eat soups. I don't think Luigi likes borscht very much either. But when he was in Mykolaiv, my mom made a three-liter pot of borscht. I told him: "Please eat it, it's very important." He replied: "Of course". And he loved it," Kharlan summarized.
Let us recall that the chosen one of the fencer from Mykolaiv is the Italian Luigi Samele, who proposed to our compatriot last September, and she accepted.
Samele is also a sabre fencer, a sport he started as a child. The 37-year-old native of Foggia is a multi-medalist at the Olympic Games. He has two bronze and two silver medals from London 2012, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.
