This has never happened before: a historic event took place in the Champions League

Manchester United and Newcastle failed to qualify for the Champions League playoffs following the group stage. Both teams finished in fourth place in their quartets, which is the first time in history that this has happened in a tournament with representatives of Great Britain.

This was reported by the statistical portal Squawka on its page on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter. Never before have two English teams been at the bottom of their groups in the same draw of the most prestigious European club tournament.

"Manchester United was considered a clear favorite to reach the playoffs in a quartet with Bayern Munich, Galatasaray Istanbul, and Copenhagen. However, coach Erik ten Haag's men failed in the tournament, managing to get only four points, beating the Danes and drawing with the Turks.

Newcastle, in turn, was in the so-called group of death with Italian AC Milan, French PSG, and Borussia Dortmund. Before the final game day, the Magpies had five points and hosted the Apennines. The home team took the lead in the 33rd minute and had every chance of reaching the 1/8 finals. However, in the second half, they conceded twice and ended the European season.

Thus, the reigning champion Manchester City and London's Arsenal will continue to compete for the trophy from England. On the eve of the Champions League, all 16 participants of the playoffs were determined.
