Think twice: what type of new cars better not to buy
The automotive market has long recovered from the pandemic and sales of new cars have begun to grow. In particular, electric cars and hybrids have become much more popular.
However, according to the Express, not all types of electric cars are worth buying. As Alex Ingram, staff writer at Auto Express, says, drivers should think twice before purchasing new plug-in hybrid models (also called PHEVs).
If these PHEVs are not charged constantly, their performance begins to decline rapidly. And the purchased car no longer meets the expectations of its owner, as well as fail to justify their higher upfront costs. At the same time, according to research, drivers themselves do not charge the batteries of their PHEVs as often as the instructions stipulate. And this is what leads to problems.
Traditionally, hybrid cars are seen as the best combination of traditional and electric cars. They give drivers the option of choosing between an all-electric, petrol, or mixed option.
Although this concept was developed to offer motorists better fuel-efficiency and lower emissions, the expert noted that some drivers forget to connect the battery. This leads to the fact that such a PHEV can consume more fuel than a standard gasoline model.
In addition, some drivers who do not charge the battery regularly complained of a number of malfunctions. These included a deterioration in the range on an electric charge. This makes such cars less practical.
"The trick to maximising a PHEV's performance is to look after that EV range and avoid the petrol engine having to cut-in at all costs," explained Ingram. According to him, such a car should be used regularly only on the electric transmission, which also helps to reduce operating costs.
"Think about preserving momentum, i.e. not wasting energy by braking too often, and ensure you turn off any electrical systems you don't need and remove any unnecessary weight," the expert recommended.
