Why is it worth finding time to watch biopics (biographical films)? Not only to learn more about historical figures (their inner transformations, dreams, the price of success/failure, etc.) and the eras in which they lived. It is also a chance to look at their own lives from a different angle... They ask questions that resonate with each of us: how to achieve goals, how to overcome difficulties, and how to find a balance between ambition and humanity.

For OBOZ.UA, we have prepared a selection of the most interesting biopics, in our opinion. Here everyone will find something that is closer to their heart.

1. Oppenheimer (2023)

Running time: 180 min.

Can a scientific breakthrough pose a threat to all of humanity? Yes. This is the subject of the film about the American theoretical and nuclear physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), who was nicknamed the "father of the atomic bomb". You will see a diverse range of his emotions: from triumph over a scientific discovery to moral doubts and heavy responsibility for what he created.

2. Lincoln (2012)

Country: USA

Director: Steven Spielberg

Running time: 150 min.

The film tells the story of the last months of the life of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who fought for the abolition of slavery and for the preservation of the nation's unity during the Civil War. It includes political maneuvers, backstage agreements, and heated discussions in the House of Representatives... The main character was played by English actor Daniel Day-Lewis. He managed to masterfully convey the peculiarities of Lincoln's manners and versatility of character, for which he received an Oscar.

3. The Theory of Everything (2014)

Country: Great Britain

Directed by: James Marsh

Running time: 123 min.

Immerse yourself in a touching love story set against the backdrop of daily challenges and great scientific discoveries. Stephen Hawking, a young and talented physicist, falls passionately in love with Jane, who later becomes his support in the fight against an incurable disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)... Moving around in a wheelchair, complete loss of speech and paralysis did not stop the researcher's desire to unravel the most exciting secrets of the world.

The film is based on the book Traveling to Infinity. My Life with Stephen: The True Story of the Theory of Everything" by Jane Hawking, a writer and linguist who was married to the legendary physicist for over 30 years.

4. Steve Jobs (2015)

Director: Danny Boyle

Running time: 122 min.

For many years, the personality and life of Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Inc. have been shrouded in myth and gossip. This film will tell you the truth about the controversial nature of this genius, the difficulties he faced on his way to success, and how he learned to make spectacular shows out of presentations. Just take a look at the cast (e.g. Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels and Katherine Waterston) and you will realize that this biopic is definitely worth watching.

5. Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

Directors: Bryan Singer, Dexter Fletcher

Running time: 134 min.

This drama tells the story of 15 years in the life of Freddie Mercury, the charismatic frontman of the rock band Queen: from the creation of the band and the musicians' search for a unique style to their legendary performance at the Live Aid festival in 1985. The plot (which will rock you due to its dynamism) is centered on Freddie's triumphs, failures, internal conflicts and spiritual searches.
