They are called hidden gems, and they are located from the cold north to the coast of the warm southern seas. You will definitely find something to your liking. These seven inexpensive tourist cities in Europe definitely deserve a place in your plans.
Warsaw, Poland
The capital of Poland boasts an incredibly rich history of the old town, which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is also rich in picturesque green spaces, such as the 76-hectare Lazienki Park. Warsaw has a very vibrant nightlife, some great new boutique hotels, and all for a very modest price. This stunning city has been voted the best European destination city for 2023 - and it's easy to see why. In the summer, visitors can relax on the city's beaches lining the banks of the Vistula River, and all year round there are excellent restaurants, water parks, and a zoo, making Warsaw a fantastic family destination.
Antwerp, Belgium
Antwerp is often overshadowed by Brussels, but that's not why it's not so crowded with tourists. The port city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting a rich artistic history, great opportunities for designers and artists, and the Plantin-Morteus Museum. Getting around Antwerp is very convenient and can be reached by train. While walking around, you will admire the beautiful architecture and don't forget to check out the famous Antwerp Jazz Club, founded in 1938, which offers free lectures on the history of jazz, as well as blues concerts and performances.
Lisbon, Portugal
The capital of Portugal is fast becoming a popular European destination thanks to its gorgeous colorful houses and cobblestone streets. Lisbon's charming neighborhoods and scenic tram rides are perfect for a budget-friendly adventure. Here you can taste the flavorful local pastries and wine and admire the stunning views. Lisbon is located at the mouth of the Tagus River on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. It is considered the oldest city in Western Europe, as it was founded around 1200 BC - several centuries earlier than London, Paris, and Rome. It is an incredibly interesting historical center with many gems waiting to be discovered.
Dublin, Ireland
Dublin is famous for its old-world charm and walkability. Visitors can easily move between many of its attractions, including the Abbey Theater and the Dublin Writers' Museum, on foot. And this already means savings on public transportation. At the same time, the cost of living in the city's hotels has recently decreased. Must-see places include the iconic Guinness Storehouse, which tells the story of the world's favorite Irish drink, complete with tastings and a rooftop bar, as well as the picturesque St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Trinity College campus.
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
While the iconic canal city of Amsterdam may be trying to counteract overtourism with Europe's highest tourist tax, travelers who behave respectfully and responsibly can still find ways to enjoy the city for a reasonable amount of money. First of all, choose to go out during off-peak hours. Then the crowds dissipate and the city appears in all its glory. Take a boat tour of the canals or rent a bike, and don't forget to ask when local museums offer free admission.
Reykjavik, Iceland
The world's northernmost capital is a multicultural city with magnificent views of snow-capped mountains and calm waters. Reykjavik is home to just 120,000 people, and 200,000 with the metropolitan area. At the same time, it is the gateway to such unusual natural phenomena as the northern lights. Experts advise staying here for a few days to enjoy Icelandic culture, for example, try Scandinavian food and experience its vibrant music scene. Venture outside the city to see the best views of the northern lights, and visit the Geysir geothermal area, Gudlfoss Waterfall, and Thingvellir National Park.
Athens Riviera, Greece
Traveling to the Greek islands can really cost you a fortune. The same cannot be said for the Athenian Riviera, which also boasts beautiful beaches and delicious local cuisine. And all this without additional flights and ferry crossings. At the same time, these places are as beautiful as Santorini, Crete, or Mykonos. If you come here outside of the high season, you can relax on a very budget. Like many destinations in Greece, the Athenian Riviera boasts a number of incredible ancient monuments, such as the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion, which was built between 444 and 440 BC.
