Sports sedans have a special place in history, offering the perfect balance between performance and everyday practicality. While many models, such as the BMW M3 and Audi RS4, have cemented their legendary status, others have quietly faded into obscurity.

Often overshadowed by brighter or more iconic rivals, these forgotten sports sedans still possess remarkable qualities that are worth considering for drivers looking for a car on the secondary market. TopSpeed has published a list of reliable and functional sedans that can compete with popular models.

Pontiac G8 GXP 2008

  • Engine: 6.2-liter V8;
  • Transmission – rear-wheel drive;
  • 415 hp;
  • 6-speed manual.

As a redesigned Australian Holden Commodore, the G8 GXP delivers reliable performance and crisp handling to rival the best German sedans of its era. Despite its American badge, it had a distinctly European driving feel, with a balanced chassis setup and responsive steering.

A striking front fascia and subtle body enhancements distinguish it from the standard G8, creating an air of sophistication. Unfortunately, production of the G8 GXP was discontinued.

Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 2006

  • Engine – 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged;
  • Transmission – all-wheel drive;
  • 274 hp;
  • 6-speed manual.

Unlike the standard Mazda 6, this performance-oriented version had all-wheel drive and better driving dynamics. The Mazdaspeed 6 received aggressive styling modifications, including a distinctive hood scoop, sporty alloy wheels, and aerodynamic improvements. The minimalist interior design is offset by high-quality materials and supportive seats, ensuring a comfortable ride. Despite its attractive dynamics and sophisticated design, the Mazdaspeed 6 did not achieve the commercial success that Mazda had hoped for.

Saab-9-3 Viggen 1999

  • Engine – 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine;
  • Transmission – front-wheel drive;
  • 230 hp;
  • 5-speed manual.

The 9-3 Viggen is the culmination of Saab's history of fanciful turbocharged technology and innovation. As one of the most powerful front-wheel drive sports sedans of its time, the Viggen offered a unique driving experience with a touch of Scandinavian charm.

The Viggen's design combines Saab's distinctive aeronautical motifs with sporty aesthetics. Limited production and the eventual demise of Saab made the 9-3 Viggen an elusive model. Its rarity combined with its distinct personality makes it a favorite choice for those who appreciate unconventional sports sedans.

2007 Acura TL Type-S

  • The engine is a 3.5-liter V6;
  • front-wheel drive;
  • 286 hp;
  • 6-speed manual.

The Acura TL Type-S was a standout among mid-2000s sports sedans, combining Japanese reliability with high-end performance. It carved a niche as a high-performance, precision-handling luxury sedan with a well-designed interior. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the TL Type-S prioritized driver interaction over outright luxury.

Despite being eclipsed by rivals from BMW and Audi, the TL Type-S has aged gracefully. Its combination of performance, style, and reliability ensures that it remains a compelling option for those looking for a spirited yet practical sedan.

Volvo S60 R 2004

  • Engine - 2.5-liter turbocharged inline engine;
  • all-wheel drive;
  • 300 hp;
  • 6-speed manual transmission.

The S60 R's clean lines and subtle features, such as large wheels and a rear spoiler, gave the S60 R a sophisticated yet sporty look. Inside the cabin, Volvo's characteristic attention to ergonomics and comfort was evident, with supportive seats and a functional dashboard layout. It was a car that was equally suited to daily commuting and active off-road driving.

Although the S60 R never reached the cult status of its German rivals, it remains an underrated choice for enthusiasts.

Lexus IS 300 2001

The compact proportions, expressive headlights, and clean lines give it a timeless appeal. Inside, Lexus created an interior that emphasized simplicity and quality, featuring comfortable seats and a clear layout of controls.

Although it didn't dominate its segment, the IS 300 earned a loyal following among enthusiasts who praised its driving performance.

Cadillac CTS-V 2004

  • Engine – 5.7-liter V8;
  • rear-wheel drive;
  • 400 hp;
  • 6-speed manual transmission.

This first-generation model combined performance with refined style, signaling a bold new direction for the brand. Cadillac enhanced its interior with premium materials and features that satisfied both performance enthusiasts and luxury seekers.

While subsequent generations of the CTS-V have garnered more attention, the original remains a symbol of Cadillac's rebirth.

Subaru Legacy GT Spec B 2006

  • 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine;
  • all-wheel drive;
  • 250 hp;
  • 5-speed manual.

Thanks to all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension, the car offered confident handling and a level of performance that few rivals could match in bad weather.

Inside, Subaru provided an upscale interior with leather upholstery, brushed aluminum trim, and a driver-centered layout. Despite its advantages, the Legacy GT Spec B had a hard time finding its audience, as Subaru's reputation was dominated by the WRX and STI.

Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG 2002

  • Engine is a 3.2-liter supercharged V6;
  • rear-wheel drive;
  • 349 hp;
  • 5-speed manual.

The C32 AMG demonstrated Mercedes-Benz's ability to inject performance into its luxury lineup. The design of the C32 AMG was elegant and restrained, with subtle AMG badging and aerodynamic enhancements. The Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG was in the shadow of the bigger models.

Infiniti Q45 1996

  • Engine – 4.5-liter V8;
  • rear-wheel drive;
  • 278 hp;
  • 4-speed automatic.

The Infiniti Q45 was a bold attempt to challenge the dominance of European luxury sedans. With its advanced technology and emphasis on performance, it stood out from its competitors, offering a special combination of comfort and agility.

The Q45's design was elegant and modern, with clean lines and striking exterior styling. Infiniti equipped the interior with state-of-the-art features and premium materials. It was a car that would appeal to those who appreciate innovation and sophistication. Despite its initial success, the Q45 could not maintain its momentum as Infiniti shifted its focus to SUVs.
