The first major bridge in Kyiv was the Mykolaiv Chain Bridge, built in the middle of the century before last, but it has not survived to this day. Today, the Metro Bridge stands almost in its place, and thanks to an old photo, we can compare them.

The photo was published on the page of the community "Spraha": interesting things to do in Kyiv" on Facebook. Nowadays, under certain conditions, you can see the pillars of the old overpass.

Mykolaiv Chain Bridge is the first major bridge across the Dnipro River in Kyiv, which existed in 1853-1920. It was designed and built by British engineer Charles Vigneault. Construction of the bridge began on August 30 (September 11), 1848. The metal structures of the bridge were made in Birmingham.

On June 9, 1920, by order of General E. Rydz-Smigly, the bridge was blown up by retreating Polish troops, and it was not possible to rebuild it according to the old design. The bridge was located near the present-day Metro Bridge, and the ruins of its pillars can still be seen during low water.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, a very unusual grave of a local resident who died in 1918 has been preserved at the Zvirynetske cemetery in Kyiv. On the grave of the First World War, there is a cross in the form of connected rails, the sides of which are decorated with German grenade shells.
