When choosing a car, there are many nuances to consider: from price-performance ratio to fuel consumption and brand reliability. Consumer Reports annually selects the 10 best cars based on road test performance, predicted reliability, and safety.

Experts have published the rankings in different price categories to provide a reasonable choice for buyers. The list of this year's leaders includes four hybrids, three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and one electric car, which confirms that models with fully or partially electrified powertrains can outperform their gas-only competitors.

Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek has made evolutionary progress with improved engine and transmission, a more modern infotainment system, optional electric drive, and an enhanced set of active safety features. The Crosstrek boasts the best fuel economy for a non-hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive. However, the base 2.0-liter engine is a bit weak.

Toyota Prius & Prius Prime

The latest Prius model has a sporty style and 75 hp more power. The model looks stylish and attractive after the update. The Prius Prime hybrid car provides a range of 62 km on electricity alone, which is ideal for most daily activities. The car has two transmission options.

Subaru Forester

The square design maximizes interior space and provides unrivaled visibility. The model has large doors, a spacious interior, and an increased body height. Forester is one of the best models in its class, and its handling is responsive and safe. It's a well-rounded small SUV that delivers on efficiency, which is why the Forester has been ranked among the top performers year after year.

Mazda 3

The Mazda3 sedan and hatchback are extremely reliable to drive, with nimble handling and smooth powertrains. The base engine is a cost-effective choice and has 191 hp - more than most competitors offer. The overall feel, especially on higher trims, is more premium than the price suggests. The car offers all-wheel drive with any engine, and BSW and RCTW are standard for 2024.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Camry Hybrid delivers amazing fuel economy. It stands out for its unique and impressive combination of benefits and has a very high score (94 points out of 100) in road tests. But the main advantages are reliability and efficiency. Fuel economy is achieved thanks to a 208 hp hybrid powertrain that is smoother, quieter, and slightly faster than the base four-cylinder engine.

Ford Maverick & Maverick Hybrid

Reliability, maneuverability, accessibility, fuel economy, and low price set the Maverick apart from the competition. The interior is stylish, spacious and practical, and the controls are easy to use. The 191 hp hybrid stands out for its excellent fuel economy and added refinement.

Toyota RAV4 Prime

The hugely popular RAV4 is available with a conventional four-cylinder engine and an efficient hybrid powertrain, but the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid takes efficiency to even greater heights. Boasting 302 hp, the small SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a scant 6.3 seconds - 2 seconds faster than the gas-only version. A range of 67 km on electricity alone means owners can minimize the use of the gasoline engine.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The Highlander is a comfortable midsize SUV with agile handling, comfortable seats, active safety features, and high predictable reliability. But thanks to its 243 hp hybrid powertrain, it also delivers excellent fuel economy.

BMW X5 & X5 PHEV

The X5 is all about luxury and reliability. The balanced suspension ensures a smooth ride and stable handling that holds up on winding roads. The turbo six provides quick acceleration, but there is also a plug-in hybrid version. The X5 has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, but it's mated to a built-in electric motor and a large enough battery for reliable electric traction. Refined in almost every detail, the X5 sets high standards.

Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y offers a stylish design and a long range. Thanks to its reliable compatibility with the Supercharger, it facilitates electric drive, allowing for fast charging through a large network of chargers. The Y model is incredibly fast in Long Range and Performance configurations, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds.
