The Squid Game: how the first season ended, when new episodes will be released, and whether to expect a sequel
Today, on December 26, the second season of the hit South Korean series The Squid Game was released on Netflix. After the premiere of the first season in 2021, the international sensation topped the charts, becoming the most popular series on the streaming giant's website ever.
In the second season of The Squid Game, the main character Song Gi-hoon returns to the ring. Now, the man who was remembered as player number 456 is determined to end the hard game. Read on to find out how the story ended and what the show's creators have to say about the third season.
What the first season was about
The first season of The Squid Game follows 456 South Korean contestants who accept a mysterious invitation to win 45.6 billion won (just over $31 million). Many of them want to escape from a life of poverty or pay off their many debts. However, the participants do not realize that the game is a fight to the death.
Gi Hong is one of the lucky survivors of the first game, along with another group of characters. As time goes on, the audience begins to learn about some of the mysterious underpinnings of the organization behind The Squid Game and the VIPs who take pleasure in the deaths of poor people struggling to survive in their lust for money.
Detective Hwang Joon-ho goes undercover to find his missing brother and finds out that he was a previous winner of these games. After a confrontation with the head of the organization, Joon-ho is shocked to learn that his brother is now the head security guard for the entire operation. The detective does not agree to join his lost brother, and he is thrown off a cliff, presumably dead.
The first season ends with Gi-hoon winning the prize money in the final fight to the death with his last opponent, but he sinks into a deep depression after the traumatic experience. He hasn't touched the money for a year. Soon, the protagonist learns that player number 001, a sickly old man named Oh Il-nam, actually created the Squid Game. The man decided to go through the brutal trials himself to feel the excitement. After Gi-hoon wins the last round to learn the secrets of the game, Oh Il-nam dies before he can tell him anything.
Gi-hoon gives his mother some of his winnings and decides to go home to his daughter in the United States. But on the way to the airport, he notices that new people are being recruited, indicating that the games are continuing, and decides to stay put and return to end the Squid Game once and for all.
What is known about the second season
The second season of The Squid Game promises more violence: Gi-hoon, once again player 456, refuses to return home and instead re-enters the arena, having already won the cash prize. "I'm trying to end the game," he proclaims in the official trailer.
Actor Jung Jae said in an interview with Netflix's Tudum that his character is not the same person viewers saw in the first season, Forbes reports. "I had a lot of opportunities where I could express the kindness of the heart in the character in the first season," he said, "But in the second season, although there are certain circumstances that allow him to show that quality... I didn't have as many opportunities."
Will there be a third season of The Squid Game?
In August 2024, it became known that the thriller was extended for the third and final season. This is stated on the Netflix website. Director, screenwriter, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the news in an emotional letter to fans.
"I'm very excited to be writing this letter to announce the release date of the second season and share news about the third and final season," he wrote. "The fierce clash between the two worlds will continue in the series finale, season three, which will be released next year. Thus, the premiere of the final season of The Squid Game will take place in 2025.
