American billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX-31 rocket sent a scientific project created by schoolchildren from Lviv region to the International Space Station. The launch took place on November 4 from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA.

This was reported on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The spacecraft carried the project of the winners of the All-Ukrainian competition of school space experiments - schoolgirls from Skole Secondary School No. 2 named after Stefania Vitruk.

The experiment of Ukrainian eleventh-graders Victoria Kavchak and Victoria Batko is called "Preparation of biomedical hydrogels in microgravity."

In a commentary to Suspilne, the schoolgirls said that they had been working on the hydrogels project for several months.

"We chose hydrogels, especially since they are now actively used in Ukraine due to the war. They can help stop bleeding and heal various wounds," said Kavchak.

Batko added that the project is a mini-laboratory with experimental substances. "On the International Space Station, astronauts will study our substance. And after the test tube arrives to us, we will be able to test it ourselves," the schoolgirl said.

The students said that in space, hydrogels can function as controlled drug release systems, substrates for growing cells or plants, desiccants, hydrogel membranes, moisture sensors, and can also stop bleeding and heal wounds.

The students traveled to the laboratories of Lviv Polytechnic National University to conduct the experiment and consulted with scientists.

Then the project was sent to the All-Ukrainian competition of school space experiments. At first, three projects were selected from a number of entries in Ukraine. Of these, the Americans chose the project of the Skole schoolgirls. Finally, in early November, the project was sent to the ISS from the NASA Space Center.

It should be noted that the Junior Academy of Sciences joined the SSEP program in 2021. Previously, participation in SSEP missions was only available to students from the United States. This is the third time the project of the MAS students has gone into space.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Ministry of Education and Science has identified six universities that will participate in the project to create a Startup School - Incubator - Accelerator network. The institutions will receive financial support from the state.
