Mobilization in Ukraine has created a shortage of men in the labor market, which opens up new opportunities for women and pensioners in blue-collar jobs. Increasing the economic attractiveness of these professions can help overcome the shortage of personnel.

This was reported by HR expert Tetiana Pashkina in a commentary to the media. As a result of mobilization, many men left their jobs and went to the front, which significantly affected the situation with vacancies.

According to the expert, there is already a significant shortage of workers in many areas. There is a significant shortage of workers such as window installers, plumbers, electricians, and home repairmen.

For example, a resident of Fastiv, Kyiv region, said that after installing new windows, she could not find a craftsman to install slopes because many of those who had previously performed this work are currently serving in the Armed Forces. Some craftsmen even state in their advertisements that they can come to the site because they have all the necessary military registration documents and can move freely.

Due to the shortage of men in the labor market, women have begun to take up professions that were traditionally considered purely male. Pashkina noted that the State Employment Service actively encourages women to take up blue-collar jobs. However, according to her, this is only a "drop in the bucket," as such work cannot be done remotely and requires physical presence.

Among the examples of women learning new professions is a case where a woman took over the duties of a blacksmith after her husband was mobilized to the front. This illustrates the new realities of the labor market, where women are engaged in professions that were not typical for them before the war.

In addition to women, new opportunities for pensioners are beginning to appear in the labor market. During martial law, many employers turn to older people who can continue to work. In particular, pensioners are involved in physical and technical work, where there is a shortage of personnel due to mobilization. There are also opportunities for professional development for young people under 25 and those over 60.

Particular attention should be paid to the situation in manufacturing industries such as furniture and transportation. In May, the State Employment Service announced a shortage of workers in the furniture industry, including woodworking machine operators and furniture designers. This situation hinders the development of the industry and requires the recruitment of new staff, including women.

As for the transportation sector, industry representatives have repeatedly emphasized the acute shortage of personnel, in particular bus and trolleybus drivers. Proposals have been made to change the age limit for training to become a public transport driver to allow young people to be employed from the age of 18, which could partially solve the problem.

One of the main ways to address the shortage of workers in blue-collar professions is to make them more economically attractive. According to Pashkina, blue-collar professions need to become more cost-effective, in particular by raising wages and improving working conditions. Following the example of Europe, where plumbers and other workers have a high social status, Ukraine also needs to raise the level of respect for such professions, which will help attract new workers.

As OBOZ.UA reported earlier, Ukraine will lack 5 to 10 million workers by 2030, but the labor force can be increased by using the country's potential. To do this, it is important to increase the participation of women, veterans, and other underemployed groups in the economy.
