The Simpsons and Sex and the City were named the best TV series of all time: they are in the top 10

Experts from the prestigious American weekly Variety have jointly identified the top 100 best series and film projects in history. The list reflects evolutions and revolutions in the industry over the decades, so it also includes series that were filmed more than 50 years ago.

The rating also includes shows that are still being filmed today and even animated works that have left their mark on the history of cinema. OBOZ.UA will tell you more about the top 10 of them.

10. Roots

The tenth position was taken by the miniseries Roots in 1977. The plot revolves around events during and after the era of slavery in the United States. The 8-episode project has won many awards.

"Even though it has been the basis for sequels and a remake, the original series had an impact like no other. More than 100 million Americans stayed home on January nights to learn the story of Kunta and his descendants," the weekly described Roots.

9. The Mary Tyler Moore Show

The 1970s-77s sitcom starring the famous American actress once gained immense popularity among viewers looking for light humor and life situations faced by women of that time.

8. Seinfeld

The sitcom of 1989-98, which consisted of 9 seasons, was recognized as one of the best series in the United States. The show about everyday New York life and people in the big city could make you laugh in a matter of minutes.

7. The Wire

The drama series, which aired from 2002 to 2008, told the story of a police unit in Baltimore that tries to bring high-profile crimes to court using special wiretapping and covert video recording.

6. Sex and the City

The cult series, which first aired in 1998, gave millions of people a memorable story that is still relevant today. It not only made viewers laugh but also raised important social issues.

5. Breaking Bad

The crime drama, which was enthusiastically watched on screens from 2008 to 2013, was called "an example of the peak of that era". Experts appreciated the carefully crafted visual style, intricate script changes, the clash of everyday family life with impartial criminal violence, supporting characters, etc.

4. The Simpsons

The success of the animated project for adults and children is evidenced by the fact that it hasn't ended since 1989. It's hard to count the number of predictions, memes, and catchphrases the writers have given the world.

3. The Sopranos

The American crime and drama television series with elements of black tragicomedy was called an example of "gangster cinema" that best reflects this trend. The series ran from 1999 to 2007.

2. Mad Men

Between 2007 and 2015, viewers enjoyed a drama that took them back to the sixties of the last century when the main character had a very hard time. The show touches on such serious topics as infidelity, feminism, racism, anti-Semitism, and sexual orientation, as well as a call to drink alcohol and have promiscuous, casual relationships.

1. I Love Lucy

The editorial board recognized the comedy, which first aired in 1951 and ran for six years, as the best series of all time.

"Lucille Ball was not just a performer.
