The Royal Canadian Geographical Society has announced that it has found the Quest ship, once captained by the famous Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. Interestingly, the ship, which sank more than 60 years ago, is almost intact.

"The Quest was found at the bottom of the ocean 15 nautical miles, which is about 28 kilometers, from the Canadian coast. Shipwreck searchers found the ship using sonar after a 17-hour search, CNN reports.

The English polar explorer Ernest Henry Shackleton is one of the main representatives of the period known as the "Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration". Out of 47 years of his life, he spent 32 years organizing polar expeditions, in many of which he was the main driving force. A Knight of the Royal Victorian Order and the Order of the British Empire, Shackleton died of a heart attack in January 1922 on board the famous research ship Quest, which was on an expedition in the South Atlantic at the time.

Experts suggest that Quest contains not only the history of its travels, but also artifacts from expeditions that lasted until 1962, when the ship sank. So finding this ship was an important mission for the searchers.

According to the head of the search, marine scientist and oceanographer David Mearns, before finding the ship, a team of international experts spent months of research and analysis to determine the best area to search for the wreckage.

The ship sank stern down due to a heavy engine and is now standing upright at a depth of 390 meters. In the second phase of the expedition, researchers will photograph the Quest to visually document the wreckage and its artifacts.

In 2022, shipwreck searchers found the ship of one of Shackleton's previous expeditions, the Endurance. The ship was lying at a depth of over 3,000 meters in the Antarctic waters. "The Endurance sank in 1915, trapped in ice near the northernmost part of Antarctica. Thanks to Shackleton's quick thinking and bravery, all 27 crew members survived that dangerous journey.
