The secret of the statue of the Virgin Mary in Italy, which "cried bloody tears", is revealed

Experts have finally solved the mystery of the mysterious statue of the Virgin Mary in Italy, which allegedly "cried bloody tears." The self-styled mystic Gisella Cardia, who attracted hundreds of pilgrims to the town near Rome and collected donations, turned out to be a fraud.

Back in 2016, the woman proclaimed that the Madonna di Treviñano had cried bloody tears, and since then, believers from all over the world have been traveling to see the miracle and listen to Cardia's revelations. However, the results of laboratory tests showed that the blood corresponds to the genetic composition of Gisella herself, writes DailyMail.

Gisella Cardia, who also claimed that a statue of the Virgin Mary was transmitting messages to her that she shared with believers, may face trial after DNA evidence is released, experts say.

Last year, the "mystic" was recognized as a fraud by the Roman Catholic Church.

The prosecutor's office in the port city of Civitavecchia launched its own fraud investigation into Cardia in 2023 after a private detective claimed that the blood on the statue belonged to a pig, The Guardian reports.

Believers began to claim that Cardia had deceived them. After all, she created a fund to collect donations, which, according to her, were supposed to go to create a center for sick children. However, it is not known where the tens of thousands of dollars of pilgrims went.

The defendant's lawyer, Solange Marchignoli, suggested that the presence of Gisella's DNA does not rule out a supernatural phenomenon.

"The DNA stain requires further investigation. We need to find out whether it is a mixed profile or a single one," the lawyer said. Marcignoli claims that traces of her client's DNA could be on the statue because she "kissed and held" it.

It is known that Gisella Cardia, who was previously convicted of bankruptcy fraud, bought the statue in 2016 at the Catholic pilgrimage site in Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Later, she installed a statue of the Madonna in a glass case on a hill in Trevignano Romano, a town overlooking Lake Bracciano, near Rome. This place has become a pilgrimage center, where people from all over Italy flock to worship monthly.

Solange Marchignoli said that Gisella Cardia left Trevignano and it is unknown where she is now. "I don't know where she is praying now, but I know for sure that she is driven by a deep faith and has nothing to gain from it," the lawyer said.
