Electric cars are gradually gaining ground in the automotive market around the world. However, not all drivers are ready to completely change the type of engine they drive. For such cases, there is a wide range of hybrid cars.
Hybrids combine the best of both worlds, running primarily on an internal combustion engine backed by a large battery and an electric motor. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) can run exclusively on electricity for long periods of time, unlike conventional hybrids. And now the range of such models has grown impressively. Some are able to travel more than 100 km on electricity alone. This means that many drivers may never have to fill up their cars with gasoline if they keep them charged. That's why Autocar has compiled a ranking of the best plug-in hybrids currently available on the market.

The 2024 update of the compact Volkswagen Golf eHybrid corrected many ergonomic issues, including the interior assembly, steering wheel buttons, and infotainment system. With the exception of the sportier Golf GTI and R variants, the eHybrid is the top of its range. Its 19.7 kWh battery pack delivers a staggering 140 kilometers of driving range, one of the highest on the market. Because of this, the Golf eHybrid feels like an electric car that can be driven most of the time. However, the price of the model can hardly be called budget.

BMW's family SUV is a great option for drivers who need a plug-in hybrid with excellent driving dynamics and performance. The X5 combines a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gasoline engine with a 194 hp electric motor and a 25.7 kWh battery. Its electric range is about 95 km, which is quite competitive for the segment. In total, it delivers 483 hp and 700 N-m of torque, allowing the X5 to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. Precise body control and superior ride comfort make the X5 one of the best for both drivers and passengers.

The Range Rover is a brilliant all-rounder, but the plug-in hybrid version makes it one of the best on the market. The P460e model is a large electrified SUV equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with a total output of 453 hp. A more powerful 550e is also available, which produces 542 hp. Both have the same whopping 38.2 kWh battery and can travel 110 to 120 km on a single charge. However, such a great car is not cheap.

Drivers often have concerns about how different the driving experience of a PHEV will be compared to a classic internal combustion engine car. The BMW 3 Series 330e dispels all of them. It is just as sharp in corners, has a bright balance of handling, good body control and sophisticated style. In 2025, it will receive a more powerful battery, improved from 10.3 kWh to 19.5 kWh, which will increase the range from about 60 to 100 km.

This is one of the longest-range hybrid PHEV SUVs on the market. It has a range of up to 115 kilometers thanks to a huge 25.7 kWh battery. The Skoda SUV is a nimble and versatile performer. It delivers a total of 201 hp and accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h in 8.4 seconds. However, it loses a certain degree of practicality due to its powertrain. It also has a slightly reduced trunk volume of 745 liters, which has lost in size due to the location of the battery. It is also not as versatile as the standard Kodiaq, as it is not available in a version with seven seats.
