Bessarabska Square in Kyiv emerged in the early nineteenth century as a marketplace where traders from southern Ukraine and Bessarabia (Moldova) came along the Vasylkivskyi Road. In the 1850s, it was surrounded by small private houses of the capital's residents.

The photo was posted on his Telegram channel by Kyrylo Stepanets, a Kyiv guide. You can see what this location looked like about 170 years ago.

"This is how Bessarabka looked like in the 1850s," the post reads.

The published photo shows not only the square itself but also the future Bibikovskyi Boulevard, which is now known as Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.

Bessarabska Square is a square in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, the Bessarabka area. It is located between Khreshchatyk Street, Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, Velyka Vasylkivska Street, Krutyi Uzviz, and Baseina Street. It was founded in the early nineteenth century as a trading square near the city outpost, where traders from southern Ukraine and Bessarabia (Moldova) came along the Vasylkivskyi road. In the middle of the sixteenth century, there was a cemetery on its site.

In the early 1870s, a unique church was built in Kyiv, popularly known as the Iron Church. It was built of cast iron and located near the modern building of the capital's circus.

In Kyiv, at the Zvirynets Cemetery, there is a very unusual burial of a resident who died in 1918. The World War I-era grave has a cross in the form of connected rails, the sides of which are decorated with German grenade casings.
