Every year, watermelons were brought to Kyiv by barge from the southern regions of Ukraine, particularly the Kherson region. Unloading the berries at the capital's pier in the 1950s was very different from how it is done today.

The unique photos were published in the community "Thirst: interesting things in Kyiv" on Facebook. You can see how this process took place 66 years ago.

"1958. Kyiv. River port. Watermelons from Kherson," the post reads.

The published photos show that barges with sweet berries used to be unloaded manually, with the labor of both men and women.

Back in the 1960s, the embankment near Poshtova Square and the Dnipro Cliffs in Kyiv looked a little different. And the beaches on Trukhaniv Island were much larger.

From 1878 until 1944, the City Duma building was located on the site of the current Independence Square in Kyiv. The majestic building resembled a bent horseshoe in its shape, and its roof spire was crowned with a statue of the city's patron saint, the Archangel Michael.
