Many buyers skip new car lots and focus all their attention on the secondary market. Buying a used car is somewhat like a lottery.

For the first time, Consumer Reports has expanded its online car rankings and recommendations to include used pickups, sedans, and SUVs. Experts have published the top 10 used cars that usually require minimal investment and can last for many years.

Given the price of a new car, it is not surprising that many buyers are turning to the used car market.

According to a survey by Consumer Reports, 40% of Americans who were looking for a car last year only considered used vehicles. 31% of buyers considered only new cars, and 24% were undecided.

Consumer Reports' analysis identified the top cars based on the reliability of models aged 5 to 10 years:

  • Lexus
  • Toyota
  • Mazda
  • Acura
  • Honda
  • Buick
  • BMW
  • Subaru
  • Nissan
  • Mercedes-Benz

According to Alex Knizek, deputy director at Consumer Reports, in surveys, drivers reported fewer problems with brands such as Lexus, Toyota, and Mazda. He said that these brands are also known for more modest redesigns and lean more towards high reliability.

Knizek emphasized that just because a brand is lower on the list does not mean that every car of that brand is unreliable.

"Chevrolet is a good example. Overall, Chevrolet falls around the middle of the pack. If you look at the individual vehicles, something like the 2018 or 2019 Chevrolet Equinox actually has above-average reliability," the expert explained.

Auto mechanic Jeff Landrum of Ron's Service Center in Covington, Kentucky, says he's a big fan of Toyota for their reliability.

"Toyota came out with a very comprehensive maintenance schedule that you're supposed to follow in order to get that car to be able to go the 200,000, 300,000-mile interval. Parts are readily available. Parts are not overpriced," said Landrum.

An example is the 2012 Toyota Camry.

Consumer Reports also published a list of the most popular models in certain categories and price ranges. For example, Consumer Reports recommends the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze as the best small sedan under $10,000, while the 2019 Hyundai Elantra is the best small sedan under $15,000. The 2021 Kia Sportage made the rankings as the best small SUV under $20,000.

The Toyota trio is included in CR's list of used cars:

  • hybrid SUV under $20,000: 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid;
  • small hybrid sedan under $20,000: 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid;
  • pickup truck up to $20,000: 2015 Toyota Tacoma.
