The legendary Mayweather knocked out a heavyweight who "talked too much" in 30 seconds
Floyd Mayweather's (50-0, 27 KOs) former training partner told how the legendary American boxer once knocked out a confident heavyweight in a tough sparring match, Talksport.com reports. Mayweather, who won world titles in five weight categories – from the second featherweight to the first middleweight – ended his professional career with a perfect 50-0 record.
Despite the fact that in his best years he weighed about 160 pounds (about 72.5 kg), Mayweather was not afraid to face boxers much bigger than himself in the gym.
Boxer and now promoter Dmitry Salita, an American who was part of Mayweather's team four times during welterweight training camps, told how the legendary fighter "besieged" one of these overconfident fighters.
"We were in the gym, resting after one of Floyd's fights. Then a heavyweight came into the gym and said: "I want to box," while talking too much. There was no sparring partner of the right size for him, and Floyd said: "Leonard [Ellerbee], get my stuff from the car." Leonard went to get the equipment, and Floyd entered the ring. In 30 seconds, he did some dodges, did some blocks, and then threw a body kick that dropped the boor. And this was a guy who really knew how to box," Salita said.
Salita also recalled that Floyd's uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather, often said: "If someone attacks you on the street, you don't say: "I need six weeks to go to training camp." That's exactly what Floyd did. This spirit and training from childhood make you a great fighter."
Salita noted Mayweather's rigorous training regimen, including rounds of four minutes with 15-second breaks – instead of the standard three minutes of fighting with a minute's rest.
"I didn't realize how hard it was until I tried it myself. Floyd gave me a small black eye, and ten days later I had a fight. You could still see the bruise, but people said, 'Floyd did it,' so I considered it a trophy," he added.
Although Mayweather was known for his technical precision rather than knockout power, he ended his career in spectacular fashion by stopping UFC two-weight champion Conor McGregor in the 10th round of their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
