The historic launch of Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket has been canceled: Elon Musk can rest easy
Aerospace company Blue Origin, founded by American billionaire Jeff Bezos, tried once again this morning, January 13, to launch the debut mission of its powerful New Glenn rocket, which challenges Elon Musk's SpaceX Falcon rockets. However, the takeoff, which was supposed to take place from the Florida Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral, was postponed "to resolve a vehicle subsystem issue," Blue Origin said on its X network page.
It looks like Musk can now rest easy, as this is the third failed attempt to launch a rocket from his competitor Bezos' company. Initially, the launch was scheduled for January 10 and then January 12, but Blue Origin postponed them due to unfavorable sea weather that could affect the rocket's landing on the company's emergency ship in the Atlantic, Space.com writes.
According to Blue Origin, the 98-meter-high New Glenn rocket has been in development for about a decade. It has a reusable first stage, like SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, which dominate the industry.
However, according to experts, it will take more than one successful test flight for Blue Origin to demonstrate the reliability needed to launch expensive NASA probes, high-priority national security payloads, and other commercial spacecraft, CBSNews reports.
It is known that New Glenn does not plan to deploy any satellites during the upcoming mission, which Blue Origin calls NG-1. However, the rocket will carry a payload: a test version of the company's new Blue Ring space platform.
Bezos's company also intends to test Blue Ring's communication capabilities from orbit to Earth, as well as test its telemetry in space, tracking and control hardware, and ground-based radiometric tracking, which will be used on the future production Blue Ring spacecraft.
