The Gates of Hell and the oldest haunted castle: mystical places that tourists adore

Mystical places in different countries

Mysteries have always attracted people. Haunted houses, cursed forests, unknown circles in the field: all this causes both delight and an eerie feeling inside. The most mystical places in the world are presented in the OBOZREVATEL's selection.

Chillingham Castle (Great Britain)

This castle can probably be called the oldest of all the cursed houses in the world. It was built in the distant twelfth century. In the Middle Ages, hundreds of people were tortured in the basements of this stone building. And many innocent people have died here.

Most often, visitors to the castle talk about the ghost of a shining boy. He allegedly appears at night in a pink room and screams very loudly. The legend about him has a real basis because the skeletons of an adult man and a little boy were found in the walls of this house during renovation work. They were probably buried alive because the scratches left by them were clearly visible around them. I don't even want to think what happened to them.

No less gruesome events took place in the local dungeon. It was a small room without windows and doors, which could be accessed only through a small hole in the wall. It was through this hole that prisoners with broken arms and legs were thrown inside and left to die. At the beginning of the last century, the British authorities ordered all the corpses to be removed from there, except for the last tortured girl. Her skeleton can still be seen by visitors to the castle.

Humberston (USA)

At the end of the nineteenth century, this city grew rapidly. Hundreds of laborers came here to get a job at a nitrate mining company. Houses and shops appeared here at a frantic pace. However, all this did not last long.

During the Great Depression, the company that essentially supported the entire village went bankrupt. With no other options for work, the locals began to slowly leave.

This is the official reason why Humberston disappeared from the US map in just a few years. But there is another version. It is said that due to lack of money, many residents of this settlement committed suicide and now their souls walk the streets in search of peace.

It becomes even more eerie when you find out that most of the graves in the Humberston cemetery are open because they were robbed.

Death Valley (USA)

Fortunately, no one has died here (at least, there are no official records of it) and there are no ghosts here either. The same cannot be said about the stones, which move on their own on the clay surface of Racetrack Playa Lake, which dried up many years ago.

Scientists could not solve this mystery for a long time. Ordinary people did not explain it. They implicated aliens, conspiracy theories, magnetic fields, and paranormal phenomena. But the solution was much simpler.

In 2014, a group of scientists placed stones weighing 5 to 15 kilograms with navigation sensors in different parts of the zone, set up cameras around them, and began to observe. As it turned out, on frosty nights, the ground is covered with very thin ice, which moves slightly due to the wind and drags the stones along at a speed of 2-5 meters per minute.

However, there were few supporters of this theory. Most people still believe that there is something supernatural going on here and that scientists and the authorities are simply hiding the real information from them.

Aokigahara Forest (Japan)

There is probably not a single forest in the world that has a huge sign that reads, "Your life is valuable". The fact is that up to 100 people who have committed suicide are found among the trees here every year.

The Japanese believe that evil spirits live in Aokigahara, convincing people to take their own lives. Thus, anyone who enters the forest with bad thoughts never comes back.

The worst part is that the bodies of most of the people who died here have not yet been found. This is primarily due to the very large area of the green zone at the foot of Mount Fuji: more than 35 square kilometers. At the same time, local foresters are very responsible for search operations. They go through every part of the forest, and when they find the deceased, they carry him or her to a nearby station, not leaving the body for a minute, so that his or her soul does not get lost among the trees and turn into an evil spirit.

Darvaza (Turkmenistan)

If there is a gateway to hell in the world, it is here. The 60-meter crater that has been burning for over 50 years is both fascinating and overwhelming. It seems that it will burn forever. And it all started with a simple mistake.

In 1971, a group of scientists from the U.S.S.R. discovered a gas accumulation in this area. It was decided to drill a well, but soon after the work began, the workers stumbled upon a void and the ground collapsed. There was a threat of a large gas leak. Thus, scientists and project managers urgently ordered to set fire to the crater to burn off all the gas. They thought this process would take several days, but the fire is still burning to this day.

The Turkmen authorities recently intended to bury the crater, but this is impossible until all the gas is burned. Putting it out or covering it up is simply unrealistic from a technical point of view. So all that remains is to wait.
